Easterween Eggs

Hey ghouls and creeps! Easterween is coming up quickly, and although my husband and I do not have kids, I still really enjoy dyeing eggs. This may be due to the hours spent in the dye lab pursuing my fiber art degree, or just having the desire to add color wherever possible! These eggs are a little different though, they of course true to brand, have a creepy twist. I’ll also show you a quick and easy way to make little Easterween baskets to display your eggs. Let’s get started!

I rated the Easterween Eggs as being an easy project, one that can easily be accomplished in a day!

Step 1: Prepare Your Eggs: Begin by placing your eggs into a large pot. Fill the pot with eggs inside with cold water, so that water is two inches above your eggs. Place the filled pot on the burner and set to medium heat.

Add a teaspoon of salt and a teaspoon of vinegar to contain the egg whites if the egg cracks.

Gradually increase the temperature until your water comes to a boil. I’ve found if I allow the eggs to acclimate to each temperature adjustment, then they’re less likely to crack.

Turn off the burner, and cover the pot with a lid. Leave the pot on the burner for roughly 10-20 minutes, or possibly longer if you like your eggs well done. After the timer goes off, pour the water and eggs gently into a strainer. Run cold water over the eggs, and place eggs back in the carton to chill in the fridge for a few minutes.

Step 2: Dye Your Eggs: Place your dye tablets into individual cups. You ideally want shorter cups to be able to reach the dye with the dye wands. Following the manufacturer’s instructions add vinegar or lemon juice to dissolve the tablets. Stir the tablets with a dye wand to help dissolve mixture.

Then reference instructions to get your water amount, and add water to each dye cup.

You’re ready to dye your eggs! Play around with different dye methods! Try resist techniques like a transparent crayon or hot glue. Try partially dipping the egg for an ombre effect, or submerging the eggs for a while to get those rich hues! The possibilities are endless!

Allow your dye to dry completely prior to gluing on embellishments in the next step!

Step 3: Easterween-ify Your Eggs: Using the JPG or SVG file below, cut your egg bands in Cricut Design Space. You’ll need a band for each of your eggs, and a band for the handle of each of your baskets.

After you have your egg bands cut out, decide which band will be paired with which egg. Wrap each band around the egg prior to gluing to see where the band should wrap to be the most flush. Once finalized, hot glue one end of the band and press till dry.

Wrap the band around the egg firmly, and glue the other end on top of the first end. Repeat these steps until all your eggs have been Easterween-ified.

Step 4: Making the Basket(s): I repurposed my dye cups by cleaning them out thoroughly. If you have shredded grass available, you can skip this next section where I show how to make basket grass.

Layer three sheets of cardstock and insert them into your paper trimmer. Cut about three-quarters of all sheets into 1/4″ strips.

Cut your strip length in half or thirds and wrap the strips around a pen/pencil to curl. Pro-tip: You can layer up your strips when you go to curl them as well!

Mix strip colors so that they are evenly distributed throughout your basket.

From your remaining cardstock cut a handle for each of your baskets measuring: 8 1/2″X 3/4″. Center your decorative handle band, and glue band ends to the handle. Pro-tip: Make sure to bend the handle as you’re gluing the decorative band!

Hot glue the ends of the handle to the inside of the cup. Repeat these steps for each basket.

Congrats you are ready for Easterween! Use these egg bands as napkin rings, bookmarks, as a book spine decoration, or to embellish hair clips!
