Zombie Sock Doll
Hey ghouls and creeps! One project prompt that I really enjoy is taking materials around your home and repurposing them into something new and improved! I’ve been setting aside a stash of creepy socks that have been worn through at the heel, or was missing its companion with this project in mind! I created my zombie sock dolls to mimic my husband and my personal styles and appearances, and I think they turned out macabre but adorable! Use this idea to create a zombie sock doll for each member of your family! Let’s get started!
I rated the Zombie Sock Doll project as easy! This project could be hand-sewn or sewn on a machine! Regardless of which method you use, minimal sewing is needed to make these cute but creepy zombie plushies!
*Important note: the supply list below is for one zombie sock doll!
Step 1: Sock Prep: Cut the toe off the sock approximately 2 1/4” from the toe tip. Make another cut 2” farther down the sock from the first cut.
Use the strip created as a pattern to cut the body of your zombie’s sweater. Remember to add a 1/2” to the height for seam allowance!
Cut 7/8” from the cuff of two socks. These tubes will be the ribbing around the neck and hem of the sweater.
Print the JPEG file below to use as a tracing template. Once printed, cut out each template.
Step 2: Zombie Assembly: Before we get started all seam allowances for this project are a 1/4”. Seam the toe tip(head) to your sweater piece including one of the ribbing tubes.
Flip the head and sweater piece right side out and slip inside the leg tube. Seam the leg tube to the head/sweater tube, including the second ribbing tube.
Turn your zombie wrong side out. Trace the leg template matching the feet to the bottom edge of the zombie tube.
Pro-tip: If you are having trouble seeing your tracing line, simply pin your template to your sock and stitch along the edge of the template!
Sew along the traced line. Make sure to stop sewing about a 1/4” from the crouch, you’ll need the larger opening to turn your zombie later! Trim around the legs, leaving 1/8”-1/4” seam allowance.
Flip your zombie right-side-out!
Apply the safety eyes at this time, using an awl or making little clips in the sock. Important note: I didn’t add my eyes until later because I had planned to paint the faces!
Fill your zombie with Poly-Fil.
Make the arms for your zombie using the same techniques used to make the legs.
Flip the arms right-side out and fill with Poly-Fil.
Baste the open end of each arm and synch each closed so the raw edge is turned to the inside.
Slip stitch both arms to the zombie’s sides. If you find that the zombie’s arms are sticking up more than you would like, try hand tacking the arms farther down the biceps.
Hand stitch the turning opening closed as well!
Step 3: Zombie Embellishment: Trim your faux fur into your zombie’s desired hairstyle! Pro-tip: Try clipping from the back of the fur instead of cutting through nap!
Hot glue or hand sew your zombie’s hair in place. Add your fabric paint details like eyebrows, mouths, and oozing brains!
