Disney Villians Half Apron
Hey ghouls and creeps! This is the first project of the psycho stitcher collection! This collection will contain a variety of helpful tools, notions and storage solutions to help the functionality of your sewing space all with some creepy flair. This project is a simple little half apron with a fun angled pocket, complete with a fabric loop perfect for scissor holding, clipping keys, or serving as a holster for other tools. Wear this around the studio to keep tools handy or tie it up nearby to serve as a home base for the things you need!
This project is pretty accessible even to the most novice sewer. No curved seams, or complicated sewing techniques involved in this project‘s construction.
Step 1: Cutting Fabric: Begin by cutting your two pieces of cotton to 23” X 23” and 17″ X 23″. Cut interfacing piece in two pieces measuring 8″ X WOF (width of fabric). Cut fabric ties by cutting two pieces measuring 2 1/4” X WOF. Cut scissor loop piece 2 1/4” X 9”.
Step 2: Assembly: Sew shell and liner pieces together along one of the 23”sides. Be sure to note if either of your fabrics are directional, meaning that the print orientation matters. I think of it as the ”bottom” of the print should be nearest the seam.
Press this seam allowance open, then fold piece in half with wrong sides together.
Fold your piece again by bringing existing fold up to form an 8″ band (this will eventually be the apron pocket). Make sure to do this with the front side of the apron facing you. Then fold the top left corner of the pocket down to form a 45 degree angle.
Lay a transparent ruler on top the the 45 degree fold and mark a 1/2″ from the edge (red line is where fold is located).
Cut along marked line, this will eventually make your angled pocket!
Open piece back up and fold in half again, this time with right sides together. and apply 8”X 23” interfacing along fold on shell side. You will have to overlap your interfacing pieces to be able to make up the full length of the apron pocket. Trim interfacing excess off where necessary.
Sew a 1/2” seam allowance on both sides of your apron, make sure to leave top of apron open for turning.
Press side seams open prior to turning. Turn apron right side out, using a bodkin, or other blunt object to thoroughly poke out corners. Press your apron after turning to make folds and seams crisp and clean.
I used the right side of my presser foot as a reference when doing my topstitching, which gave me a distance of 3/8” from my fold edges. Begin by topstitching the top pocket edge, not including angled side before folding over to create pocket.
Fold bottom of apron up 8” on shell side of apron and pin in place.
Complete topstitching on angled side, once again situating stitch line 3/8” from the fold. When I executed this step, I started from the bottom corner, then sewed up the angle to the top of the pocket. Once at the top I pivoted my presser foot back to the bottom of the apron, to then create my first vertical seam subdividing my pocket (look for red line in photo).
Pro tip: backstitch a few times both at the top and bottom of each stitch line dividing the pocket to provide extra strength! Continue doing pocket topstitching by sewing 3/8” from the pocket edge on the right side. My last two topstitching lines are positioned both 2 1/4” and 4 1/2” in from the right edge, these measurements can be adapted to accommodate the tools you wish to store in your apron!
Step 3: Finish: Take your piece cut to 2 1/4” X 7” for the scissor loop and fold in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. Sew a 1/4” seam along long raw edges. Turn strip right side out, and press.
Sew 1/8” from the the edge on the seamed side to keep strip folded cleanly with use. Place both short raw edges along the waistline of the apron, 3” in from the left side. Stitch both a 1/4” and an 1” from the top edge, back and forth several times over ends of loop.
Join apron tie strips together with a diagonal seam, and trim excess to be a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Find the center of your tie strip and line that up with the top center of your apron on the backside, and pin in place. Continue pining tie strip along the top edge until you reach both sides of the apron. Sew ties and apron together with a 3/8″ seam allowance.
Mark your 3/8″ seam allowance on your tie extensions with chalk, a disappearing ink pen, or running a stitch line to use as a fold line later.
Fold over seam allowance (3/8″) on the opposite side of the tie strip, and then fold tie strip over top edge of apron. Complete the tie extensions in a similar fashion, folding 3/8″ on both sides and then folding ties in half to conceal raw edges.
Stitch an 1/8″ from the fold the length of the ties. Congrats you’re finished! You now have the perfect studio companion to carry all your tools with some villain flair!
