Frame Flip

Hey ghouls and creeps! You know when you have decor in your living space that you don’t take the time to appreciate and enjoy because it’s been there for so long? Although I loved the look and feel of the original, I felt like it was time for a change! This flip was super easy and dramatic, and I can’t wait to get this inspirational piece above my desk! This project is a great way to feature material that you absolutely adore, but can’t seem to find the right project for. The material used for this project is from the fabric collection When Stars Align by Alicia Jacobs Dujets. Let’s get started!

I rated the frame flip project as easy! This project requires spray painting, die-cutting, spray adhering material to mat board, and potentially some hand painting.

Step 1: Painting: Begin by removing the glass and mat from your frame, and place the glass in a safe place. If you have an internal frame on the inside edge of your mat I would recommend removing it and spray painting it with your frame.

I was originally not planning to adhere the material to the mat, so I taped off the internal frame and painted this by hand. This was to avoid removing the tape and hot glue keeping this in place. If you don’t plan to incorporate fabric into your project, simply put masking tape around the internal frame to protect the mat and paint with acrylic paint as I did.

Apply spray paint to your frame and potentially your internal frame following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Some tips and tricks that I’ve picked up to help avoid drips, globs, and inconsistencies in your spray paint include shaking your spray paint can super well before painting. Start and stop each spray stroke off of your project. This will hopefully avoid getting bits of debris from the nozzle on your frame. Also, have the spray can roughly 12″ from the project’s surface while painting. The idea is to apply the paint in small layers to the frame’s surface to avoid drips.

If you do get drips or yucky spots, simply use sandpaper to remove the paint and reapply! Leave your frame pieces in a safe place to dry completely. Come back to evaluate coverage, and apply additional coats if necessary.

Step 2: Adhering Material: Using a multi-surface spray adhesive, spray an even coat of glue to the front of your mat. Line the material’s selvage to the mat’s edge and press to adhere. Work from the inside to the outside of the mat so that you don’t get bubbles or wrinkles in the material. Try lifting the material around the outside edge of the mat to check how well it’s sticking. If needed, apply more spray adhesive around the mat’s edge and press the material to the mat.

Take your mat and cut the excess material away with a rotary cutter and ruler or with fabric shears.

Check the inside edges and apply spray adhesive to adhere fabric better if needed. Take your now dry internal frame, and gently negotiate it back inside the mat.

Step 3: Die-Cutting: Begin by cutting your poster board to an 11″X14″ piece.

Using the JPEG or SVG file below, cut your inspirational quote in Cricut Design Space or on a die cutter/ laser cutter of your choice.

After the cut is complete, adhere black cardstock to the backside of your quote with a glue stick.

Cut away any cardstock that sticks out from the outside edge of the poster board. If you had issues with the internal bits and pieces of your letters tearing away from your project(from using your extra-sticky fabric mat like me, lol), retrieve them from the mat and glue them in place. Put your glass, mat, and quote back into your frame.

Congratulations! You completed your frame flip! Hang your new wall decor in your workspace or above your nightstand to give you that extra lift of motivation when you need it!
