Frankenstein Cupcake Toppers

Hey there ghouls and creeps! Another week means another project! This week in honor of Valloween, I thought it would be fun to have one of the most iconic horror genre couples as the subjects! Enter Frankenstein’s monster and his bride. These cupcake toppers are a great embellishment for your Valloween, Halloween or just because treats.

The cupcakes made in this tutorial were made from a cake mix and store-bought frosting. The purpose of this post is not to present a recipe to make a cake batter or icing from scratch, but rather highlight some tricks in the baking process as well as the creation of these creepy/cute cupcake toppers! Let’s get started!

The Frankenstein Cupcake Topper project is rated as easy. I would not recommend cutting the pieces for these manually. The reason being, that many of the pieces have tiny intricate interior cuts. Cutting with a die-cutter or a laser cutter is recommended!

Step 1: Bake your Cupcakes: Pre-heat your oven to the specified temperature for your pan type. Following the instructions on the cake mix box, combine ingredients in a medium size mixing bowl. Using a mixer or whisk stir ingredients together until thoroughly mixed.

Put cupcake liners into the reservoirs or grease your pan. Using a spoon, or spatula scoop or pour batter into each reservoir so that they are about 3/4 of the way full.

Place pan in the oven and bake for the appropriate time for your pan type. Using a toothpick check cupcakes to see if they are finished baking before removing them from the oven. Allow cupcakes to cool in pan for about 20 minutes. Then place pan with cupcakes into fridge to chill for about 30 minutes minimum. *Disclaimer: By filling each resevoir 3/4 full you should find that your cupcakes won’t bake together like mine!

Step 2: Fill and Frost Cupcakes: After cupcakes have thoroughly chilled, remove them from the refrigerator. Using an icing tip, push the tip into the center of each cupcake, base first. This will remove some of the cake from the center for the caramel filling.

Once you’ve removed your cupcake centers, use a finger and press down into the hole to create more space for the caramel. Warm up the caramel in a microwave-safe container. Pour the caramel into a piping bag with the tip snipped.

Take the filled piping bag and use the caramel to fill your cupcake centers.

Once the caramel has cooled, take another piping bag and cut the tip so that the opening is a 1/4” in diameter. Fill this piping bag with frosting and squeeze the frosting onto cupcake tops. I’ll typically start somewhere on the outside and spiral toward the center when applying my frosting.

Once the frosting is applied, sprinkle your sprinkle mix onto the tops of your cupcakes.

Step 3: Cutting your Topper Parts: Use the JPG or SVG files below to cut out the topper parts in Cricut Design Space, or other die-cutting machine of your choice.

Step 4: Assembling Toppers: Using a paper glue stick, glue white and green layers together of Frankenstein’s monster and his bride.

Take one purple spiderweb heart and lay it on top of one red heart, lining up edges.

Take the monster and his bride pieces and put hot glue on the back of the bride.

Line the bottom of the piece with the point of the heart and press in place.

Repeat these steps to glue the monster in place, lining up the piece’s base with the curve of the heart’s right side.

Hot glue a toothpick to the center of the backside of the topper’s front. About a 1/2” of the toothpick should be on the inside of the topper.

Put more hot glue on the backside of the topper and sandwich the back piece over the glue and the toothpick. Press topper layers together until the hot glue cools. Repeat the above steps to make additional cupcake toppers.

Congratulations you’re finished! You can now enjoy your Frankenstein Valloween cupcakes! Obviously these toppers could adorn other treat tops, including cakes if the decoration was resized to scale.
