Ghost Pillow
Hey ghouls and creeps! While browsing Halloween decor at places such as Pottery Barn and GrandinRoad, I noticed a trend with dimensional cut-out ghost pillows. I also noticed the price tag being approximately $40-$50 and thought, we can do better! This pillow requires a super simple pattern, with quick assembly! Keep scrolling to find the free pattern below! Make this pillow as a cute but creepy addition to your Halloween throw pillow spread, and to elevate those spooky vibes in any living room or bedroom decor! Let’s get started!
I rated the Ghost Pillow project as easy! This project is great even for novice sewers! Skills and techniques used for this project include: applique sewing, seaming pillow perimeter, filling the pillow with Poly-Fil, and slip-stitching pillow opening closed.
Step 1: Cutting: Download and print the PDF file below. Using the cutting instructions on the pattern, cut your ghost pillow pieces.
Pro-tip: Prior to cutting your eyes and mouth appliques iron your Heat n’ Bond double-sided adhesive to the backside of the felt. This will make it so you only have to cut these pieces once! Apply graphite behind the eyes and mouth on the pattern. Trace the eyes and mouth onto the paper side of the Heat n’ Bond. Cut the appliques out along your traced line.
Step 2: Appliques: Peel the paper from the backs of your applique pieces. Place your appliques to make your ghost’s face on the pillow’s front. Pro-tip: Use the placement guide on the pattern to make it look like the pillow in this tutorial!
Iron the appliques until they fuse completely. Then take a scrap of Craft-Fuse interfacing (no bigger than the ghost’s head) and iron it to the reverse side of where you ironed the face.
Set your machine to the satin or applique stitch setting and stitch around the edges of your appliques to finish. Pro-tip: Try this stitch on a scrap piece of material prior to starting to get the settings just right!
Cut away interfacing excess as close to stitching as possible. Be super careful not to snip your material by accident!
Step 3: Pillow Assembly: Lay your pillow front and back pieces on top of each other with right sides together.
Stitch around the pillow’s perimeter with a 1/2″ seam allowance, leaving a 4″ opening at the bottom. Make small clips into the seam allowance, being careful not to cut through your stitch line.
Flip your ghost right side out! Poke out the arms, head, and tail out completely with a blunt tool.
Fill your pillow with Poly-Fil starting with the head and arms, and then moving on to the body. Be generous with how much Poly-fil you put in your pillow to give your ghost a smooth appearance. Slip-stitch the opening at the bottom of your pillow closed.
Congrats! You’re finished! Add this fun and festive addition to your couch or bed just in time for spooky season!
