Ghost Tassel Earrings

Hey ghouls and creeps! I don’t know about you, but I adore the ghost tassel trend! Instead of recreating ghost tassel garland, I decided to put a spin on this project and make it miniature! These ghost tassel earrings can be made in a variety of colors (don’t limit yourself to black and white!) and would be great as a gift or an addition to your jewelry collection! Finished tassel earrings measure 2″ in length, not counting fish hook ear wires.

I rated the Ghost Tassel Earring project as easy! If you are looking for an accessible project where you get to craft cute, colorful, and creepy jewelry this is for you! Skills covered in this project: tassel making, french knots, and minor jump ring bending.

*The below supply quantities are for one set of earrings!

Step 1: Tassel Making: Take a piece of heavy card stock cut 2″X3″. Wrap your cross stitching floss around the card twenty times. Cut the floss strand at the bottom edge of your card stock.

Cut a piece of floss approximately 7″ and tie it twice around your floss wrap 3/8″ from the top edge of the card stock. Turn the knot of the floss piece to the inside of the tassel.

Cut the tassel off the card by cutting along the bottom edge of the card stock.

Slide the card out from inside the tassel, making sure to keep the tassel strands folded in half. Take the tails of the 7″ floss tie and knot the tails twice around the other side of the tassel. This will create the top of your tassel or the ghost’s head.

Pro-tip: If you find that the strands from your floss tie aren’t laying uniformly with the rest of the tassel strands, take a hand sewing needle and thread the strands under the tie in with the rest of the strands!

Trim the tassel ends so that they are even.

Step 2: Making the Eyes: Taking a strand of black cross stitching floss, peel two plies (or threads) from the yarn. Thread the two threads through a hand sewing needle, and tie the thread ends in a knot.

Stick the threaded needle inside the loop that makes the ghost’s head. Stick the point of the needle from the inside of the loop up through the ghost’s face. The spot where the needle comes up will be the placement of your first eye. Pro-tip: try to stick the needle up through a strand of floss, this will make your knot stay in place!

Wrap the floss around the needle four times and then stick the needle near where you initially stuck the needle through.

Hold the tail of the wrapped floss firmly, so that you don’t end up with weird loops or excess in the knot. Pull the floss strand all the way through the french knot.

Pinch the ghost’s head from the sides to tighten the knot. Careful to not pull too hard, because this might pull the eye to the inside of the head. If the eye gets a little buried, don’t worry! Take your needle tip, and poke and pull the knot back up to the surface before moving on to the next eye.

Take your threaded needle and stick it back in between the head layers up through the face to make the other french knot eye. Duplicate the previous steps to complete the remaining eyes on your ghost tassel earrings!

Step 3: Earring Assembly: Take two 8mm jump rings and bend them by hand or with a set of needle nose pliers to separate the ends.

Stick one end of the jump ring through the loop of each ghost’s head.

Before closing the jump ring, thread on the fish hook ear wires. Make sure to thread the fish hooks on where the hook points to the back of the ghost.

Close your jump rings, and swivel the ring ends to the inside of the ghost’s heads.

Congrats! You’re finished! Wear these super cute and creepy ghost tassel earrings for Halloween or all year long!
