Halloween Bouquet

Hey ghouls and creeps! Truthfully, we’ve been decorating for Halloween in the Smith-Johnson household since early September, but now that it’s officially October we’re making finishing touches to our Halloween decor! For this project, I wanted to create a fall floral arrangement with a twist. I incorporated some wire wrapped bone beads and spiders in the flower’s centers, and used a vintage pumpkin trick or treat bucket as my vase.

Who else used a plastic jack-o-lantern pail when trick or treating? I knew from the beginning that I wanted one of these iconic Halloween staples (in my opinion) painted monotone using our home’s palette. A lot of our regular decor is aqua, true orange, and various shades of grey, so I opted to paint my arrangement’s “vase” aqua using the Montana Gold spray paints. This was my first time using the Montana Gold brand, and I highly recommend them! The coverage was thick, rich, easily applied, and dried quickly. I’ll definitely be using these paints again for future projects!

This project is super simple, perfect for a quick weekend craft that will get your home Halloween ready!

Step 1: Paint your Pumpkin Bucket: Prior to applying the spray paint remove the bucket’s handle, to avoid having it lay in the paint unintentionally. Go outside and set up a little painting booth, by cutting down two corners of a box to open up one side. Leave the side of the box now laying flush with the bottom attached to be an extended protective base for your painting booth.

When applying the paint be sure to cover all sides of the pumpkin evenly, I personally did not paint the bottom of the bucket or the inside to conserve paint. After coating the pumpkin thoroughly to your preference, allow the paint to cure using the manufacturer’s instructions. While drying, leave the pumpkin somewhere outside where it won’t be disrupted.

Step 2: Making your Halloween Blooms: Prep your flowers by taking wire cutters and removing each stem by cutting as close as possible to the base.

Set flower stems aside while making flower center adornments in the following steps. Take your plastic bone beads (I did three small and three large), and your jewelry wire. Begin by sticking one end of the jewelry wire through one of the holes of the bone bead. Leave a wire tail measuring 3 1/2″.

Wrap the wire around the bead until you reach approximately 1/4″ from the opposite end. Cut wire leaving a tail measuring 2 1/2″. Return back to the other end, wrap wire tail around bead a few times until you reach a 1/4″ from the end.

Take needle nose pliers and coil each end of the wire so that the coil sits on top of the bone bead. When wrapping my beads, I wrapped three beads with copper-colored wire, and three with dark grey-colored wire. Repeat previous steps for the remaining five bone beads.

Collect your bone beads, spiders, and flower stems and hot glue the bones and spiders to the flower’s centers. I paired copper wrapped beads with grey flowers and grey wrapped beads with orange flowers to create contrast.

Step 3: Making the Floral Arrangement: Once your adornments have all been glued to the flower’s centers, begin arranging them in your vase.

Having no formal training in flower arranging, I simply use my design intuition when putting together flower arrangements as decor. In general, I try to alternate my flower heads by color, so that the colors in the bouquet are mostly evenly distributed throughout. You may use this method when considering the size of each flower type. If you find that some stems are too long, simply fold the stem so that it sits at the preferred height in the arrangement.

Congratulations, you’re finished! Place your new arrangement as seasonal decor around the house, or as a centerpiece for your spooky feasts. I stuck a bat LED stake from Target in ours, tying it in perfectly with the bat theme occupying the shelf above our bookshelf!
