Poison Apple Wrist Pin Cushion
Hey ghouls and creeps! This poison apple wrist pincushion is another one from the psycho stitcher collection! This collection contains a variety of helpful tools, notions and storage solutions to help the functionality of your sewing space all with some creepy flair. I’ve become a fan of Snow White’s poison apple may be due to the ever-expanding awesome products inspired by this iconic image, and it’s ability to communicate certain doom to the audience without explanation (sorry Snow White). I decided to contribute my two cents using this symbol as inspiration for this upcoming project. This wrist pincushion is super handy strapped to your wrist so you don’t have to worry anymore about having pins as you move around your craft space!
This project is overall pretty simple, the most involved part potentially is finishing the applique edges. Once you’re past this step, it’s smooth sailing! You should be able to finish this project in approximately an hour!
Step 1: Cutting your Fabric: Use the PDF below to cut your wrist pincushion pieces. Apple, poison applique and wristband are all included. Pro tip: iron Heat n’ Bond to the back of applique fabric prior to cutting out applique pieces. Use applique template to trace design on to the paper side of your Heat n’ Bond and fabric sandwich and then cut out, peal off paper when you’re ready to iron to apple pieces.
Step 2: Applying Applique: Remove paper backing off applique pieces. Place on top of apple pieces right side up and press until fused.
There are several methods that could be used to finish the raw edges of your appliques. I ultimately chose to do a straight machine stitch super close to the edge to reduce fraying. You could also execute a straight machine stitch (like mentioned above) and then seal with bright green fabric paint, or sew with a zig-zag stitch or satin stitch over top of the edge. These were a couple options I considered, I don’t mind a little fraying and I didn’t want to lose any of the applique’s details so that’s why I went with the straight stitch.
Step 3: Making the Wristband: So little disclaimer, after making this project I reviewed the assembly process, and made some modifications to streamline/ improve the process! Two of those changes included the way the wristband is applied to the back of the pincushion and the inclusion of Velcro to make the wristband easier to fasten , which you will see later, just a heads up!
Begin by ironing interfacing to the wrong side of your wrist piece. Mark a 1/4” seam allowance on both long sides of your wristband(do this on the right side). Fold wristband in half lengthwise with right sides together, and stitch around both ends and an 1 1/2” down the side with a 1/4” seam allowance.
Flip wristband right side out, poking out corners completely. Fold sides along marked 1/4” seam allowance to the inside of the band and pin. Topstitch or slip stitch the sides together catching all the layers to keep raw edges inside wristband.
Find the center of the wristband and pin to the center of the back panel of the pincushion. Sew rectangle on top of wristband measuring 3/4” X 1 1/2” to anchor band to the back of pincushion. In the original design I hand sewed the wristband to the back of the constructed pincushion, which took more time and was not as durable.
Step 4: Assemble Pincushion: Take felt stem and place the bottom of the stem at stem placement point notated on the pattern, pointing stem down. Sew back and forth a couple times at the stem’s base being careful to not go more than a 1/4” deep into the apple.
Fold and pin wristband extensions to the pincushion back to keep in place. Place Pincushion front on top of pincushion back, right sides together, and pin together. Sew around pincushion with 1/4” seam allowance, make sure to leave an opening about 2” wide to be able to turn pincushion right side out. Keep in mind your pincushion will be bulgier with the wristband on the inside than what’s pictured below.
Trim notches around curves up to seam and turn pincushion right side out. Take sketch pad paper apple or backer cut out, fold in half width wise and manipulate in through apple opening. Continue to negotiate paper apple inside until it lays flush with the back.
Take Poly-Fil and fill apple until filled to your preference. Pin up apple opening and slip stitch opening closed.
Step 5: Finishing Wristband: Take your D-ring or loop lock and thread one end of the wristband through the center and fold the end over 1/2”. Machine stitch back and forth or slip stitch end in place to hold D-ring/ loop lock in place.
Wrap wristband around wrist and simulate fastening it in place. Make markings on the wristband for Velcro placement. Machine or hand stitch Velcro halves in place.
You’re finished! Congratulations on your new poison apple wrist pincushion! Make this project as a pincushion or as a brooch by eliminating the wristband!
