Skull with Air Plants Wall Decor

Hey ghouls and creeps! Continuing on with last week’s flip trend, I have yet another example of flipped Christmas clearance for you this week! This project is super easy, and came together quickly! After finishing this DIY, I really appreciate how almost luxurious it looks! I could see someone charging upwards of fifty dollars for this piece I was able to put together under twenty. Let’s get started!

I rated the skull with air plants wall decor project as easy! Skills and techniques covered in this project include: some minor disassembly, cutting a plastic skull in half, hot gluing skull and foliage inside the frame, and spray painting.

Step 1: Prep: Begin by disassembling your frame so that the front is flat with no embellishments. Remove any torn paper, so that you don’t end up with weird texturing when you spray paint later.

Then cut your skulls so that the face of the skull will be parallel to the front of the frame. I took a transparent ruler and aligned the profile of the skull with the 2 1/4″ marks. Using a permanent marker I made as straight of a line as I could.

Then with an Xacto knife or utility shears, I cut along the line, removing the skull backs.

Step 2: Assembly: Before gluing your skulls and foliage in place, lay your pieces within the frame to get an idea of placement.

Once you’ve decided on where you would like things to be glued, make pencil marks on the sides and at the top of the skull for reference. Then begin gluing everything within your frame. Consider gluing parts of the foliage to the sides of your skull to stabilize. Once everything is glued and secure you can move on to painting!

Step 3: Painting: While I was painting outside it started raining (typical OR), which made some cool and interesting texturing. You can accomplish a similar look by adding hot glue drips prior to spray painting.

Following the manufacturer’s instructions, spray paint your pieces in a well-ventilated area, making sure to get all edges and surfaces. I found that I needed to apply about two thorough coats before I was satisfied with the coverage.

After the final coat, allow your pieces to completely cure before bringing them inside. Once dry, bring in your new decor and hang them up on your wall!

Yay! You’re finished! You should be proud of the new decor you created! Stand back and take several moments to appreciate what you accomplished!
