Spooky Sugar Cubes

Hey ghouls and creeps! It’s the most magical time of the year when stores begin to stock their Halloween merchandise! While out Halloween hunting this year I found some new silicone molds to add to my collection. In addition, I’ve been interested in making my own novelty sugar cubes which inspired the creation of this project! These sugar cubes are great for tea parties or as cake or cupcake embellishments!

I rated the Spooky Sugar Cubes as easy! These novelty sugar cubes are incredibly easy to prepare and make! It’s important though to pack your patience because these may take upwards of 24 hours to harden depending on humidity!

Step 1: Preparing the Sugar: Place 2 cups of sugar into a medium-sized bowl.

Gradually add 4 teaspoons of water or extract to the sugar. Experiment with different flavor combinations with almond, lemon, or vanilla extracts. I even saw rose water and orange blossom water as possible additions to modify the flavor of your sugar cubes! You will want to stir in your water, extracts, and herbal water bit by bit to avoid melting the sugar.

Once your sugar is combined with your liquid mixture it should be damp. Divide your sugar into three smaller bowls and add about 4 drops of food coloring to each. Stir the food coloring into the sugar until the color appears evenly throughout.

Important side note: the color of your sugar cube will affect the color of your drink! Also, gel food colors may take longer to dry.

Step 2: Molding Sugar Cubes: Using a spoon, pack each cavity of your mold with your prepared sugar. Continue to distribute your sugar until your mold is completely filled.

Using the back of a knife scrap away any excess sugar that may be sitting on the top of the mold. After filling all your molds, set them aside and allow to harden for 24 hours. Check the progress of your sugar cubes by removing one at 24 hours to see if the others need more time to harden.

Step 3: Enjoy!: After your sugar cubes have hardened to your preference, remove them from your molds and enjoy!
