SSDGM Embroidery Hoop

Hey ghouls and creeps! Where are my murderinos?!? This project will probably end up being one of a series because there are too many great quotes from my favorite true-crime podcast, My Favorite Murder. Every Monday and Thursday a new episode rolls out, and I tune in to listen without fail! This project is a new spin on an old fave, mostly in technique, not in idea. I adore the embroidery hoops featuring MFM quotes that are incredibly popular on Pinterest and in the MFM community but wanted to figure out an alternative that wasn’t as time-intensive. So I came up with this easy and quick by comparison option which uses a series of appliques. Let’s get started!

I rated the SSDGM Embroidery Hoop project as easy. Skills and techniques covered in this project: iron-on applique, one sewn seam, embroidery hoop finishing, fabric painting, and minor hot gluing.

Step 1: Cutting your Appliques: Use the SVG file below to cut your appliques in Cricut Design Space or with a laser cutter. Cut the text in the center of the material you plan to stretch inside your embroidery hoop(foundation material). I cut my foundation material into a rectangle 6″ longer than the measured length and width of the embroidery hoop (e.g. my hoop measured 5 1/2″X9″ which meant my foundation fabric measured 11 1/2″X15″). Then cut one of each embellishment applique pictured, fabric colors determined by color coding in the file. *Pro-tip: Iron Heat n’ Bond to the wrong side of your applique material prior to cutting.

Step 2: Coloring your Text: Begin by cutting one rectangle from your red material measuring 1 1/2″X5″ and one rectangle from your turquoise material measuring 3″X5″. With a 1/4″ seam allowance sew the two rectangles together along a 5″ side. Press the seam open with an iron.

Peel off the paper backing from behind the letters.

Lay your seamed rectangle over the now exposed Heat n’ Bond behind the letters. Make sure that the seam lands in between the “and don’t” and “get murdered!” lines of the text, so it’s not revealed. Press the rectangle until the Heat n’ Bond sticks completely. Pro-tip: Lift and lower the iron instead of running the iron over the applique risking possible movement! Flip your applique over to the front and press this side as well to secure the bond.

Step 3: Skull and Bloom Appliques: Place the outside ring of your embroidery hoop on top of your material with the appliqued letters. Center the hoop by both eyeing it and using a ruler to verify. You’ll be surprised how close you can get the text centered with just your vision! With a pencil trace along the inside of the ring. This will be your guide for your applique placement.

Peel the paper backing off your other appliques and situate each piece by referencing the diagram below.

I would recommend laying out both sides before ironing and fusing, just in case you need to make adjustments! I also found a transparent ruler super helpful in verifying that my pieces were lining up just right. Once perfected, iron your skulls and blooms until they adhere to the surface of your material.

Using black fabric paint and a fine-tipped paintbrush, go in and fill letter interiors.

Step 4: Embroidery Hoop Finishing: Remove the inside ring of your embroidery hoop and trace the outside of the ring on a piece of black felt. Cut the oval out of the black felt.

Take an eraser and remove the pencil line used to mark your hoop ring on your appliqued material. Center your appliques inside your embroidery hoop, and tighten when ready.

Trim away excess material about 2 1/2″ from the outside of the hoop.

Using two threads of embroidery floss, baste around the outside edge of the extra fabric and pull so it’s synched around the back of the hoop.

Lay the felt oval over top of the back of the hoop. Blanket stitch along the edge of the felt, catching the material on the back of the embroidery hoop. Continue stitching all the way around the hoop until finished.

Step 5: Embellishments: Cut the end of your washi tape even and wrap it around your embroidery hoop starting and ending at the hardware. Make sure to have equal amounts of excess tape extending past the hoop edges. Then wrap the excess to the front and back sides of the hoop.

Tie your 1/4″ ribbon into a bow measuring 2 1/4″ wide with 1 1/2″ tails. Hit the tail ends with a flame to prevent fraying later. Hot glue your bow approximately 1/4″ up from the center bottom of the embroidery hoop.

You’re finished! Congratulations! It’s time to hang your new MFM embroidery hoop up on the wall to enjoy and adore, and of course remember to, stay sexy and don’t get murdered!
